Mr. Keates has significant experience in conducting transfer pricing studies and related consulting assignments in various industries.  His transfer pricing experience covers industries including chemicals, furniture, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, toys and games, heavy equipment, building and construction materials, paper, printing, packaging, automotive components, apparel, and aluminum. His transfer pricing expertise includes functional and comparable analysis, analysis of intangible property value and royalty rates, determination of appropriate commission and service fees, and the use of economic modeling to handle complex pricing issues.

Mr. Keates has 17 years of transfer pricing experience and 20 years of economic consulting experience. Prior to joining Wright Economics, Mr. Keates spent 6 years working for Analysis Group Economics and 12 years at Charles River Associates, both located in Boston. During this time, Mr. Keates has also provided assistance to attorneys in litigation cases requiring liability and damages analysis for major antitrust and patent infringement issues.  His experience includes economic modeling of market structure, competition analysis, preparation of exhibits for presentation at trial, and preparing lawyers for cross examination of the economic analysis presented by the opposition at trial.

In addition to transfer pricing analysis and litigation work, Mr. Keates has worked extensively in the field of transportation economics and analysis. He has helped developers and planning authorities by developing revenue and ridership forecasts for major transportation system projects along the northeast corridor, in New York City, in Las Vegas, and at Logan Airport in Boston, as well as analyzing the cost of accidents and the economic benefits of mass transportation. Mr. Keates’ expertise in survey analysis played a prominent role in creating more accurate and reliable ridership projection models.

Mr. Keates has been an invited speaker at numerous seminars, including those sponsored by I.E. Canada and Infonex, and has been published widely in leading transfer pricing journals including the International Transfer Pricing Journal. Mr. Keates has performed significant work for numerous clients, including the following:

  • A major pharmaceutical company – pricing study involving transfer of intangible property by a US company to its Puerto Rican subsidiary.
  • A major US medical products company – a planning study for the creation of a European headquarters operations.
  • A major US corporation – pricing study for products produced by its Irish subsidiary.
  • A major European manufacturing company – pricing and royalty study for the transfers of products throughout Europe and the United States.
  • A major international software company – royalty study for its Irish subsidiary.
  • A major international manufacturer – a pricing study for the manufacture and sale of licensed products in the United States and Canada.
  • A major international producer – a pricing study for services rendered in the US for the benefit of foreign subsidiaries.
  • A major brewing company – pricing study for expansion into new European markets.
